Engineering Distributed Waste-to-X Infrastructure

Hyrogas SIA is a Latvia-based clean technology and engineering company developing proprietary, fuel-flexible gasification and syngas reforming systems for distributed Waste-to-X applications. We convert non-recyclable carbon-based waste and residue streams into high-purity synthesis gas—unlocking pathways to dispatchable power, fuel-cell-grade hydrogen, carbon capture and utilization (CCU), and circular platform chemicals.

Led by an international team of senior engineers with more than two decades of hands-on experience in thermochemical conversion and advanced industrial gas cleaning, Hyrogas bridges the critical gap between process innovation and bankable industrial deployment.

Hyrogas has successfully engineered, built, and industrially demonstrated a TRL7 gasification prototype in Latvia, developed with co-financing from the EU LIFE Programme (“Waste to Resources IP”), Latvian Government innovation grants, and private equity. The proprietary HyroPOX™ process has been rigorously validated in operating environments for the thermochemical recycling of challenging municipal waste fractions, establishing clear pathways for compliant ash utilization and certified End-of-Waste synthesis gas.

Dennis Ross Morrey

Valdis Bisters holds an MSc in Physics and currently undertakes PhD studies on Zero Carbon Development at the University of Latvia. He is an ex Climate Policy Director at the Ministry of Environment, Republic of Latvia responsible for development of carbon trading mechanisms and has initiated set up of the Green Investment Scheme to use earmarked revenues from Kyoto international emission trading. He has completed sovereign sales under the international private law at the scale of $250 million. He was actively involved in designing training programs on environmental science, environmental management and sustainable development. Now he works as private consultant and developer of innovative technologies for circular economy.

Giovanni Cappello is very experienced industrial engineer and visiting lecturer at Politecnico di Milano on gasification and CO2 capture and storage with an MBA from the Università Bocconi di Milano. He has filed patents on thermochemical reforming processes, and started his journey in gasification R&D and system design back in 2002. He has developed and commissioned downdraft, updraft gasifiers in South America, Asia and Europe, and has completed a long technology road map to come up with the most efficient and economically feasible route on advanced gasification. His recent gasification work is related to a demo installation in Milan which takes gasification to a new level of tar free syngas and overall system efficiency suitable for further downstream gas processing to replace fossil products.

Juris Kalviss is highly qualified engineer in gasification and gas cleaning industries. His track record goes back 20 years when he built the first biomass gasification system in Latvia. He has been consulting in implementation of downdraft, mixed type updraft-downdraft, staged and vortex gasifier projects. He has hands on experience in engineering of product gas cooling and cleaning technologies, experience in engineering and operations of infrasound and mechanical cleaning systems of hot gas heat exchangers, experience in 3D CAD engineering software SolidWorks, Autodesk software suite, and open code CFD software OpenFOAM, as well as simulation software Comsol Multiphysics.

Dennis Ross Morrey is a graduate of Engineering Sciences with a specialization in Industrial Engineering from the University of Piura, Peru. He has dedicated his profession to holistically study, understand and interpret some biological systems and natural phenomena to conceptualize and mimic their potential application in various industrial sectors and environmental changes. With Giovanni Cappello, he is the co-founder of CO2APPS, an Italian company dedicated to the integration of advanced industrial technologies to generate negative carbon emissions through the production of hydrogen and the reduction of acidification of seawater. At Hyrogas, his work focuses on the research and development of the mathematical algorithm that simulates the thermochemical reforming of organic matter with the smallest possible carbon footprint.

Dennis Meadows is engaged now in writing, speaking, and consulting on issues related to the 50th anniversary of his book, The Limits to Growth. He won the 2009 Japan Prize and numerous other international awards for his contributions to a sustainable future. As Professor of Systems Policy at the University of New Hampshire, he founded the Institute for Policy and Social Science Research in 1982 and directed it until his retirement. He has an earned PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and five honorary doctorates from universities in East and West Europe and the United States acknowledging his research and communication related to the dynamics of environmental systems. One of his ten books was translated into 35 languages and voted to among the ten most important environmental texts in the 20th century. He earned university degrees in chemistry and management; he sat on the management boards of The US Electric Power Research Institute and several high-technology startups. He won Germany’s Konrad Lorenz Prize in 1975.

Helga Kromp-Kolb won the 2005 award, Austria’s Scientist of the Year. As Professor of Meteorology and Climatology at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), she founded the “Center for Global Change and Sustainability” in 2010 and directed it until her retirement. 

She has served, among other things, as chairwoman of the Forum for Atomic Questions, member of the Expert Advisory Board of the Climate and Energy Fund, and scientific advisor at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. She helped establish the Climate Change Center Austria (CCCA), a network of climate research institutions in Austria. It is the central contact point for research, politics, media and the public for all questions relating to climate research in Austria. She won Germany’s Konrad Lorenz Prize in 1991.
